The company then started manufacturing jeepneys, trucks, and buses designed specifically for the US army. Almost a decade after, they begun producing special vehicles customized for their clients. A name change happened in 1977, having Dong-A Motors as its new name. This was the time when the SsangYong Business Group took over with the operation of the company, and changed its name into SsangYong Motors.
1991 was the year when SsangYong and Daimler-Benz tied up together. The goal was for SsangYong to manufacture a sport utility vehicle designed with the latest Mercedes-Benz technology. The benefits of this tie-up was aimed for both companies. It gave SsangYong a name in the worldwide car industry and on the other hand, gave Mercedes a competitor in the increasing SUV market.
The result was the SUV they named Musso, which was sold by Mercedes-Benz initially, followed by SsangYong. The Korean company benefited on this tie-up even more after they have stopped making new Musso’s when they created improved versions of the Istana, MB100, Korando, Rexton, Chairman, and the Kyron. They also utilized the existing Daimler designs.
SsangYong has built up factories in South Korea (main factory), Russia, and Ukraine.
